Editorial: Why Free Speech?

Many of us struggle to make sense what is without doubt a deepening global socio-economic and political crisis, at the heart this crisis lies an unprecedented multi-directional assault on freedom speech. But free speech? How should it be exercised ends? These are more difficult questions navigate in contexts growing divisions society, crises state governabilities, people’s governmentalities disparities power wealth. Debates about speech not new; however, form they take now seems particularly vindictive violent. Across world, we witness disturbing moves curtail liberal democracies totalitarian states alike among left wing as well right movements. As recent events show, first casualty all forms authoritarianism including religious fundamentalism. And from flow range other crackdowns civil society serious human rights violations that cannot challenged. This why debate has become increasingly urgent.
